How to Reduce Stomach Acidity Naturally

Acidity, also known as acid reflux or heartburn, occurs when the stomach produces excess gastric acid. Normally, the stomach needs hydrochloric acid (HCl) to break down food. However, when acidity levels rise beyond normal levels, the acid may flow upward into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest, throat, and upper abdomen.

The stomach lining can handle acidity (pH 1–3), but the esophagus cannot (pH ~7). Therefore, when acid reaches the throat, symptoms like burning, sour taste, heaviness, and discomfort occur.

Common Causes of Acidity

  • Eating spicy, oily, or fried foods
  • Overeating or eating late at night
  • Drinking too much tea, coffee, or alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Irregular eating habits
  • Lack of sleep
  • Hiatal hernia or weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES)

Symptoms of Acidity

  • Burning sensation in chest (heartburn)
  • Burning in stomach or throat
  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Bloating and gas
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bad breath
  • Indigestion or constipation

Diagnosis

If symptoms are frequent, doctors may recommend:

  • Upper GI Endoscopy
  • X-ray
  • pH Monitoring

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Acidity

1] Fennel Seeds (Saunf)

Fennel soothes the stomach and improves digestion.

  • Chew 1 tsp fennel seeds after meals
    or
  • Boil fennel seeds in water and drink 2–3 times daily.

2] Buttermilk

Rich in lactic acid, it neutralizes stomach acid.

  • Mix 1 part curd with 4 parts water, stir well, and drink.
  • Add black pepper or coriander leaves for better digestion.

3] Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

Acts as a natural antacid.

  • Boil 1 tsp cumin seeds in water and drink after meals.

4] Ginger

Contains anti-inflammatory compounds that reduce acid.

  • Chew a small piece of raw ginger
    or
  • Drink ginger tea 2–3 times daily.

5] Apple Cider Vinegar

Helps restore stomach acid balance.

  • Mix 1–2 tsp ACV in warm water and drink before meals.

6] Jaggery

Helps cool the stomach and aids digestion.

  • Suck on a small piece after meals.
    (Not recommended for diabetics)

7] Cloves

Cloves increase mucus production which reduces acid.

  • Chew 2–3 cloves after eating.

8] Cold Milk

Calcium in milk neutralizes stomach acid.

  • Drink one glass of plain cold milk during acidity.

Diet & Lifestyle Tips to Prevent Acidity

Eat small, frequent meals Large heavy meals
Drink water regularly Caffeine & aerated drinks
Eat fresh fruits & vegetables Spicy, fried, oily foods
Sleep 2–3 hours after eating Sleeping immediately after meals
Maintain healthy weight Smoking & Alcohol
Practice yoga/meditation Stress & irregular routines

Additional Tips

  • Elevate your pillow or bed while sleeping.
  • Chew food thoroughly.
  • Avoid tight clothing around the stomach.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical help if you experience:

  • Continuous chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Symptoms for more than 2 weeks
