Aciclovir (Acyclovir) for Herpes & Shingles Treatment | Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Learn how Aciclovir (Acyclovir / Zovirax) treats herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox. Updated 2025 guide on dosage, side effects, precautions, and safe usage.

Effectiveness of Aciclovir (Acyclovir / Zovirax) in Treating Herpes and Skin Viral Infections

Aciclovir (also spelled Acyclovir) is an antiviral medication commonly prescribed for infections caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV).
These viruses cause conditions such as:

  • Genital Herpes
  • Cold Sores (Oral Herpes)
  • Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
  • Chickenpox (Varicella)

Aciclovir is available as oral tablets, capsules, suspension, topical cream, and ointment.
The form your doctor prescribes depends on the severity and location of the infection:

Condition Common Form Used
Mild cold sores / oral herpes Aciclovir cream / ointment
Genital herpes Tablets or ointment
Shingles Higher-dose tablets
Chickenpox Tablets (in adults / older children)

How It Works:

Aciclovir does not cure herpes, but it reduces viral replication, shortens outbreaks, decreases pain, and helps symptoms heal faster. It also reduces the frequency of recurrent outbreaks when taken as suppressive therapy.

Before Using Aciclovir – Important Considerations

Inform your doctor if any of the following apply:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Kidney problems or dehydration
  • Weakened immune system
  • Allergies to antiviral medicines
  • Currently taking other prescription or herbal medicines

How to Take Aciclovir (Dosage Guidelines)

Typical dosage varies depending on diagnosis:

Condition Standard Adult Dosage Duration
Shingles 800 mg 5 times daily 7–10 days
Initial Genital Herpes Outbreak 200 mg 5 times daily 7–10 days
Recurrent Herpes Outbreak 200 mg 5 times daily 5 days
Herpes Suppression (Daily Prevention) 400 mg twice daily 6–12 months
Chickenpox (Adults/children >40kg) 800 mg 4 times daily 5 days

Important:

  • Space doses evenly throughout the day.
  • Drink plenty of water to protect your kidneys.
  • Finish the full course, even if symptoms improve earlier.

Using Aciclovir Cream / Ointment

  • Apply 5 times daily to affected skin.
  • Apply at the first sign of tingling or burning (before blisters form).
  • Wash hands before and after application to avoid spreading infection.

Precautions to Prevent Spreading Herpes

  • Avoid sexual contact when sores are present.
  • Use a condom even when no symptoms are visible (virus can still shed).
  • Avoid touching sores, and avoid sharing lip products.

Possible Side Effects of Aciclovir

Common Side Effects (Mild):

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Mild skin irritation with cream

Less Common but Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Care):

  • Confusion or hallucinations
  • Severe rash or blistering
  • Decreased urination / kidney function problems
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising

Older adults and people with kidney disease are more likely to experience side effects.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use expired medication.

Buying Aciclovir / Acyclovir Online

Aciclovir is available by prescription in most countries. Some over-the-counter cold sore creams contain mild antiviral ingredients.
When purchasing online:

  • Choose licensed pharmacies
  • Check brand authenticity
  • Avoid unverified sellers offering uncontrolled antiviral tablets
