Essential oils are multi-component, natural oils that contain organic substances useful for human health. Essential oils are made from medicinal plants that are widely used for the treatment and prevention of various diseases.

More than 30 different types of essential oils with unique healing properties are used for aromatherapy and phytotherapy. Volatile oils are most often used for topical therapy of skin diseases, but can also be used for inhalation therapy of bronchitis, sore throat and cough.

To get just a few drops of healing oil, a huge number of plants is required. Therefore, price of essential oils for skin, made from medicinal plants is significantly higher than the price of dietary supplements made from the extracts of the same plants. For phytotherapy and aromatherapy, oils made from one or several plants can be used. Medicinal properties and mechanism of action of essential oils for skin depend on the plants they are made from. For example, essential oils for skin from clove, eucalyptus and turpentine have anti-inflammatory effect and can reduce musculoskeletal pain, back pain and joint pain in arthritis, strains, bruises and sprains. Essential oils for reducing skin rash, skin tags, eczemas, fungal infections of the skin, herpes symptoms and dermatitis are made from medicinal plants Melaleuca alternifolia, Evening primrose and Cymbopogon martini.

Topical use of volatile oils for skin rash helps to reduce skin inflammation, relieve sunburn symptoms and accelerate the skin healing in case of cuts. In regular use of essential oils for skin care, skin elasticity can be increased and a healthy complexion is maintained. Unlike to synthetic creams and ointments, essential oils for skin care do not cause allergic reactions. Therefore, they can be used to care for any skin type, including skin hypersensitive to allergens.

Essential oils for skin do not only provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. For instance, healing oils from Olibanum and Rosmarinus officinalis provide calming and relaxing effects. Therefore, they can be used to support the nervous system and improve mental health. Some types of essential oils for skin (e.g., Salvia sclarea oil) help to reduce menopausal symptoms in women and maintain normal sexual function in men. Other essential oils for skin (e.g., Myrtus communis oil) help to improve sleep, as well as can be used for phytotherapy of insomnia. The fact that organic essential oils can be useful for maintaining therapy of cancer diseases (including skin cancer) deserves a special attention. Essential oils for skin exert positive effect on the immune system and can help to improve physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of cancer patients.

It should be noted that qualitative essential oils for skin evaporate quickly and leave no greasy stains on clothing. Therefore, they can be applied to the skin at any time of the day, including immediately before leaving home.

What are the best essential oils for skin?

The best essential oils for skin are the ones that are best for your skin.

That’s right–I think listening to your body includes listening to your skin. And when it comes to essential oils, different oils cater to different skin issues. And it’s important to know what will work best for your unique skin type!

Pure, high quality essential oils can be intensely nourishing and balancing for the skin. So whether you’re dealing with oily skin, wrinkles, or dry patches (or all of the above!), essential oils are here to help.

I love using essential oils in my homemade recipes like my whipped body butter and my homemade toner. I try to use DIY recipes when I can — then I know all the ingredients are natural and healthy! And these days, it doesn’t hurt to be careful about what’s in your skincare products.

But first, you need to know what skin type you have before reading this post.

If you don’t already have an idea of what skin type you have, here’s a handy page to help you understand the different skin types. (Even if you know what your skin type is, you might still learn something from that page. I sure did! There are two pages, by the way — be sure to read them both.)

PS: I can’t talk much about specific skin conditions and problems (since I’m not a dermatologist!), but supporting your skin type is key to bring out your best and most beautiful skin. So make sure you know your type and use the right essential oils and carrier oils for your skin!

BASIC MOISTURIZER FORMULA

Before I get into which specific oils are best for your skin, I want to give my basic formula for homemade moisturizer. It’s extremely simple and can be easily tailored to your skin type.

Here’s the formula:

I use about 10-20 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.

So if I want to make a facial serum, I will usually start with 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil, then I will add 30 drops of my favorite facial oils (such as 5 drops melaleuca a., 10 drops patchouli, 5 drops frankincense, 5 drops bergamot, and 5 drops ylang-ylang).

Following this basic formula, you can use your favorite moisturizing oil and add the best essential oils for your skin type. Feel free to mix it up and experiment! Everyone’s skin is a little different, so the perfect blend for you might be different than what works for someone else. This is especially important when you might be dealing with more than one skin type (such as aging and sensitive skin). You can mix and match essential oils in your recipe to make sure you have all your bases covered.

What kind of bottles do I use?

I usually keep my facial serum in amber dropper bottles like these. The amber color protects the oils from direct light and the dropper makes it easier to use just the right amount (usually 1-2 drops is plenty for my face — you might need 3-4 if you have very dry skin).

The Best Essential Oils For Skin {Sorted By Skin Type}

You might notice a few oils that land on more than one list. Essential oils are pretty awesome! Their skin-supporting properties can sometimes be used to help different skin types. Lavender is probably one of the most versatile! It can be used for pretty much any skin type.

So don’t worry too much about picking the “wrong” oil. Essential oils have a wide range of benefits, so you can’t really go wrong.

For Oily Skin:

These oils have properties that tend to regulate and normalize oil production:

  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Cypress

(I personally love jojoba oil for my sensitive, oily skin. Did you know jojoba oil is also known as jojoba wax?)

For Breakouts and Blemishes:

These oils can be added to your moisturizer to calm and prevent breakouts, and can also be applied neat (undiluted) as a spot treatment:

  • Melaleuca Alternifolia (tea tree)
  • Geranium
  • Vetiver
  • Lavender
  • Patchouli

For Dry, Chapped Skin:

If your skin tends to be dry and chapped, a deeply moisturizing oil like shea butter or cocoa butter is a good base. Argan oil and rose hip oil are also good facial oils for deep moisture.

Here are the essential oils that are best for dry skin types:

  • Cedarwood
  • Geranium
  • Myrrh
  • Sandalwood
  • Palmarosa
  • Roman or German Chamomile

For Aging Skin:

Argan oil and rose hip oil are some of the best oils for aging skin that tends to be prone to wrinkles and sagging. Use them as a carrier oil and then add these essential oils to nourish aging skin:

  • Tangerine
  • Ylang-ylang
  • Patchouli
  • Cypress
  • Sandalwood
  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Rose
  • Palmarosa
  • Elemi

For Combination Skin:

These are some of the best essential oils for skin that tends to be both dry and oily (sounds impossible, but I’ve been there!):

  • Patchouli
  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Orange

For this I would recommend a base of jojoba oil, since it is nourishing for dry skin but still tends to be friendly to oily skin.

For Red Marks and Dark Spots:

Some of the best essential oils for skin with red marks or dark spots are:

  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Frankincense

I use these in my serum recipe for toning and brightening the skin. Simply use 3-5 drops each per tablespoon of carrier oil, and you have the perfect skin-toning moisturizer if you tend to need help with uneven skin tone. Use twice a day or as needed.

Beyond Moisturizer: Using Essential Oils For Skin

Homemade moisturizers tend to be the easiest way to use these oils on your skin, but you can also add them to your favorite cleanser, mask or toner. Toner, masks, and oil cleansing are also great ways to use your essential oils. Try any of these recipes with your oils to get the benefits:
